Former Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has explained the reasons behind his decision to withdraw from the 2027 Sokoto South Senatorial race, stating that the move was aimed at strengthening unity within the African Democratic Congress and creating opportunities for younger politicians to rise within the party structure.
Tambuwal, who remains one of the most influential political figures in Sokoto State and is widely regarded as the leader of the ADC in the state, voluntarily stepped aside and relinquished the party’s senatorial ticket to former Commissioner for Finance, Faruk Malami-Yabo.
The development followed several days of internal consultations, negotiations, and disagreements among party stakeholders regarding the selection of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held on Friday, Tambuwal addressed party loyalists, political associates, youth representatives, and community leaders, where he explained that leadership should go beyond personal ambition and focus more on continuity, service, and the deliberate grooming of future leaders.
According to the former governor, the time had come for experienced politicians to intentionally create space for emerging voices, younger leaders, and fresh political ideas capable of reshaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape.
Tambuwal stressed that sustainable leadership requires older political figures to mentor and empower the next generation instead of holding onto political positions indefinitely.
He described Faruk Malami-Yabo as a competent, visionary, and committed leader with the integrity and leadership capacity necessary to promote progressive governance and strengthen democratic values both within Sokoto State and beyond.
The former governor expressed absolute confidence in Malami-Yabo’s ability to unite party members, provide purposeful leadership, and advance development-oriented policies for the benefit of the people.
Tambuwal also clarified that his withdrawal from the senatorial race should not be interpreted as retirement from politics or public service.
According to him, his decision represents a strategic transition from active frontline politics toward mentorship, political guidance, and broader nation-building initiatives aimed at encouraging more young Nigerians to participate actively in governance and leadership.
He explained that empowering younger politicians remains one of the most effective ways to secure the future of democratic institutions and ensure continuity in governance.
The former Speaker of the House of Representatives of Nigeria further maintained that true leadership is measured not only by personal achievements but also by the ability to prepare others to carry forward the responsibility of service.
Responding to the endorsement, Faruk Malami-Yabo expressed appreciation to Tambuwal for the trust and confidence placed in him.
The former commissioner described Tambuwal as a political mentor, a unifying figure, and a symbol of selfless leadership whose influence has shaped many political careers in Sokoto State.
Malami-Yabo pledged to uphold the principles of accountability, inclusiveness, transparency, and people-focused governance that Tambuwal consistently promoted throughout his years in public office.
He assured party members and supporters that he would work toward strengthening unity within the ADC while prioritising policies capable of improving the lives of the people.

Confirming the development during a telephone interview, the Sokoto State Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Lamir Aminu, stated that Tambuwal sacrificed his personal ambition in the interest of peace, unity, and stability within the party.
According to him, the ADC leadership in Sokoto remains committed to giving younger politicians opportunities to contest elective positions and contribute meaningfully to governance.
He explained that Tambuwal’s action reflects the party’s broader ideology of nurturing energetic, vibrant, and capable young leaders who can deliver effective representation and development.
Aminu further disclosed that several House of Representatives tickets within the state have also been allocated to youthful candidates believed to possess the competence and vision needed to represent their constituencies effectively.
