Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has reportedly been rushed to hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground, raising concerns about his health ahead of the German champions’ upcoming Bundesliga fixture.
The 40-year-old Belgian reportedly received medical attention before being transported by ambulance to a hospital in Munich on Friday. A rescue helicopter was also seen landing at Bayern’s training complex on Säbener Straße.
According to reports, Kompany had been struggling with a viral infection in recent days, which reportedly caused significant discomfort, including problems with his legs and difficulty climbing stairs. German newspaper Bild also reported that the illness had aggravated issues involving old scar tissue.
The former Manchester City captain had already experienced health problems before Bayern’s 6-1 Bundesliga victory over RB Leipzig last weekend. He reportedly spent parts of the match sitting in the dugout.
Kompany subsequently missed training sessions and the pre-match press conference ahead of Bayern’s Champions League clash with Arsenal on Wednesday. Assistant coach Aaron Danks stepped in to address the media in his absence.
Danks explained that Kompany had been advised to rest while recovering, although getting the manager to step away from his responsibilities was not easy.
“Getting Vince to rest is a challenge,” Danks said.
Despite his illness, Kompany recovered sufficiently to lead Bayern during their 2-2 draw with Arsenal at the Allianz Arena.
Following the match, the Belgian admitted that he had continued working despite feeling unwell.
“I caught a pretty nasty virus last week, and of course I didn’t listen to my body,” he said.
The latest reports indicated that Kompany was in a stable condition following the reported incident. However, the precise circumstances surrounding his collapse remained unclear.
Bayern Munich had not issued a detailed official medical update at the time of reporting.
The German champions are scheduled to face Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Sunday, but Kompany’s availability for the match remains uncertain.
If the manager requires additional time to recover, assistant coach Danks could take charge of the team for the fixture.
