Elon Musk has regained his trillionaire status after his estimated wealth jumped by $88 billion in a single morning, driven by rising shares of SpaceX and Tesla.
According to Forbes, the world’s richest person had a net worth of approximately $1.013 trillion as of 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, following significant gains in both companies.
SpaceX shares reportedly surged by more than 10 per cent after the company announced third-quarter earnings that exceeded analysts’ expectations. Tesla shares also climbed by more than 3 per cent ahead of its earnings report, which was scheduled for release after the stock market closed on Wednesday.
The rally in Tesla shares was also reportedly supported by Musk’s confirmation that SpaceX and Tesla were exploring the possibility of merging the two companies.
Speaking during SpaceX’s earnings call on Tuesday night, Musk disclosed that the boards of both companies had established special committees to examine the proposed merger.
He described the idea as a “good idea” but cautioned that the deal was not “a certainty”.
Musk’s personal fortune is closely tied to the performance of the two companies. He owns approximately 38 per cent of SpaceX and 11 per cent of Tesla, meaning changes in their valuations can significantly affect his overall wealth.
SpaceX Reports Strong Revenue Growth
SpaceX recorded a 161 per cent year-on-year increase in revenue during the third quarter, according to the supplied report. Revenue from its artificial intelligence business also reportedly grew by 830 per cent.
The company also recorded substantial growth in its Starlink satellite internet business, with subscribers increasing from 1.6 million to 13.6 million during the quarter.
These developments have strengthened investor interest in Musk’s businesses and contributed to the latest increase in his estimated fortune.
Musk’s Trillionaire Fortune Has Seen Sharp Swings
Musk reportedly became the world’s first trillionaire on June 12 following SpaceX’s public listing.
However, his fortune suffered a historic setback just one week later, when a sharp decline in SpaceX’s valuation reportedly wiped approximately $350 billion from his wealth within seven days.
His latest $88 billion gain has now pushed his estimated net worth above the trillion-dollar mark again, highlighting how movements in the valuations of his companies can produce enormous changes in his personal fortune.
Musk Makes Promise to Give Children SpaceX Shares
Beyond his latest wealth increase, Musk also announced on October 19 that he intended to give every child in the United States a share in SpaceX next year.
Forbes estimated that distributing shares to approximately 72 million Americans under the age of 18 would cost around $10.5 billion, based on a closing share price of $146.03 recorded on Friday.
The proposal would represent a significant distribution of shares if carried out as described.
With SpaceX reporting strong growth and investors watching the possibility of a merger with Tesla, Musk’s latest return to trillionaire status puts renewed attention on the performance of his business empire.
