Veteran journalist Christiane Amanpour has announced that she will leave CNN in June 2027, bringing an end to her 43-year association with the international news network.
The 68-year-old CNN chief international anchor announced her decision on Monday, describing her time at the network as “43 fantastic years” while expressing excitement about new professional opportunities.
“Remember: always be truthful, not neutral,” Amanpour said in a statement, reflecting the journalistic principle that has guided her throughout her career.
Amanpour has hosted her flagship interview programme on CNN International since 2009, interviewing influential political leaders and reporting from some of the world’s most significant conflict zones.
Her departure will follow a gradual reduction in her presenting responsibilities. She reduced her schedule in January 2025 and is expected to move to a weekly programme format in January 2027.
The programme is scheduled to end in May 2027, while Amanpour will continue reporting for CNN until June, when her departure from the network is expected to take effect.
CNN chairman Mark Thompson disclosed that he had been discussing her plans with her for several months. He praised her reputation and influence in international journalism, describing her as “one of the most trusted and beloved journalists anywhere.”
Thompson also commended Amanpour’s decades of reporting from around the world, adding that CNN would recognise her contributions before she leaves.
Throughout her career, Amanpour has covered some of the most significant events in modern history. These include the First Gulf War, the Bosnian War, the genocide in Rwanda, conflicts in Afghanistan and Ukraine, as well as developments in Iran.
Her reporting from conflict zones and interviews with major political figures have made her one of the most recognisable journalists in international broadcasting.
Reflecting on her time at CNN, Amanpour also acknowledged the journalists, programme teams and field crews who worked alongside her over the years.
She said their shared commitment to facts, evidence and humanity had helped shape her approach to journalism and reporting.
Although she is preparing to leave her regular presenting role, Amanpour reaffirmed her commitment to independent journalism and CNN’s mission as she looks towards the next stage of her professional career.
Her planned departure marks the end of a long chapter at the network, where she has spent more than four decades covering major international developments and holding influential figures to account.
