Erling Haaland continued his impressive scoring form with a brace as Manchester City defeated Ipswich Town 3-2 on Saturday, maintaining their perfect start to the Premier League season despite growing uncertainty over the club’s financial case.
City have now won their opening seven league matches, marking their best start to a Premier League campaign. The victory also leaves them six points ahead of defending champions Arsenal, who could reduce the gap with a win against Nottingham Forest on Sunday.
Phil Foden opened the scoring in the 19th minute, finishing confidently after Jeremy Doku’s run created an opportunity inside the Ipswich defence.
However, Ipswich responded almost immediately. Daizen Maeda found the net in the 21st minute after getting past Marc Guehi to bring the visitors level.
Haaland restored City’s advantage in the 34th minute, meeting Mateo Kovacic’s cross with a precise header to put the hosts back in front.
The Norwegian striker struck again in the 69th minute, racing onto a pass from Iliman Ndiaye before calmly guiding the ball past Ipswich goalkeeper Christian Walton.
The goal took Haaland’s tally to 12 in his previous eight appearances for City, underlining his importance to the team’s strong start.
Ipswich refused to give up, however, and Zian Flemming converted a penalty in the 90th minute after Guehi committed a foul. The late goal created a tense finish, but City managed to hold on for all three points.
City Maintain Momentum Amid Financial Uncertainty
The victory came at a difficult time for Manchester City off the pitch, with the club facing a major legal battle after being found guilty of more than 100 breaches of Premier League financial rules.
City have appealed the verdict, describing the case as a “Premier League conspiracy”. Depending on the outcome of the appeal and any eventual sanctions, the club could face a significant points deduction or even expulsion from the top flight.
Despite the uncertainty, City supporters showed their backing for the team at the Etihad Stadium. Fans booed the Premier League anthem before kick-off, while thousands waved inflatable bananas in a display of loyalty to the club.
The bananas are a long-standing symbol among City supporters, dating back to the late 1980s when fans used them to bring humour to difficult periods for the team.
Supporters also exchanged chants with Ipswich fans in a light-hearted atmosphere, even as the club’s financial case continued to attract attention.
On the pitch, City responded positively after their midweek Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. Their latest victory keeps them firmly in control of their league campaign, although Arsenal have an opportunity to close the gap.
For now, Haaland’s goals and City’s winning momentum remain the main story, even as questions persist about the possible consequences of the club’s financial case.
