The United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has arrested another suspected member of the ShinyHunters hacking group in connection with a cyberattack that exposed sensitive information belonging to FBI employees.
FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest on Friday, October 9, saying the suspect was believed to have played a role in the recent breach of the agency’s recruitment website.
In a statement shared on X, Patel confirmed that FBI agents had taken another alleged accomplice into custody as investigations into the hacking incident continued.
“Our agents in the field have arrested another suspected co-conspirator of the ShinyHunters group,” Patel said.
He added that the individual was believed to be responsible for the recent intrusion into the FBI’s jobs website, which resulted in the exposure of a significant amount of sensitive employee information.
Third Arrest Announced Since FBI Website Breach
The latest development marks the third publicly announced arrest since news of the breach emerged in late September.
Earlier, Dutch authorities announced the arrest of a man identified to Reuters as Pepijn van der Stap. The individual had previously served a sentence for data theft.
Another suspect, Saif al-Din Khader, a teenager in Jordan, was also reported to have been arrested over alleged links to the ShinyHunters hacking group. He was described in reports as a suspected key member of the group.
The arrests represent an ongoing effort by law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend individuals allegedly involved in the cybercrime operation.
However, the investigation into the FBI website breach and the activities of those suspected of being connected to the group remains ongoing.
FBI Vows to Pursue Remaining Members
Patel said the FBI would continue working with its international partners to target the remaining members of the hacking group and their associates.
“We will continue to work closely with our partners to disrupt what’s left of the ShinyHunters group and their associates, no matter where they operate,” he said.
His statement signals the agency’s determination to pursue suspects regardless of their location as authorities work to address the consequences of the breach.
The exposure of sensitive employee information from an FBI recruitment website has raised concerns about the security of government systems and the potential risks posed by cyberattacks.
With another suspect now in custody, investigators are continuing their efforts to establish responsibility for the incident and disrupt the activities of those allegedly linked to the ShinyHunters group.
