US President Donald Trump has renewed his criticism of the Nobel Peace Prize committee after missing out on this year’s award, accusing Norway of making a “disgraceful and embarrassing decision” by failing to recognise him.
Trump expressed his frustration on Friday, October 9, during a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, hours after Navi Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge, was announced as the Nobel Peace Prize laureate.
The American president questioned Pillay’s selection, describing her as a “mystery person” and claiming that he had never heard of her before the announcement.
“I never heard of the person. Nobody did,” Trump said.
He subsequently accused Norway, which hosts the Nobel Peace Prize committee, of damaging its reputation by awarding the prestigious honour to someone other than him.
Trump Says Norway Will Not Be Forgotten
During his address, Trump described the Nobel committee’s decision as a lasting stain on Norway, insisting that his own efforts to resolve international conflicts should have earned him the award.
“This is an indelible stain on the country of Norway and those people that made such a disgraceful and embarrassing decision,” he said.
Trump also listed several international disputes that he claimed to have helped resolve or prevent, including tensions involving North Korea and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, as well as China and Taiwan.
However, he did not provide evidence to support his claims about preventing wars between the countries.
The president also launched another attack on the Nobel Peace Prize itself, arguing that the decision had undermined the award’s credibility.
“The Nobel Peace Prize has been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and really enemies of civilization. And we will not forget, Norway,” Trump declared.
Trump Has Repeatedly Expressed Desire for Nobel Prize
Trump’s latest outburst follows years of publicly expressing disappointment over his failure to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
During his presidency, he has repeatedly highlighted what he considers his contributions to international peace and diplomacy, arguing that his efforts deserve global recognition.
However, the award went to Pillay this year, drawing a sharp reaction from the American president.
Pillay, a former International Criminal Court judge, oversaw a United Nations report that concluded Israel had committed genocide in Gaza.
The report’s findings have been a subject of intense international debate, while Israel has rejected accusations of genocide.
Nobel Peace Prize Decision Sparks Fresh Controversy
Trump’s criticism has once again drawn attention to his longstanding ambition to receive the Nobel Peace Prize and his willingness to challenge decisions that do not go his way.
His remarks also highlight the continuing tension surrounding the award, which recognises individuals and organisations considered to have made significant contributions to peace.
Despite Trump’s objections, the Nobel committee selected Pillay as this year’s laureate, leaving the US president openly questioning the decision and warning that Norway would not be forgotten.
