Travellers planning to fly through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri may need to adjust their travel plans as the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) prepares for temporary runway repairs ahead of the Christmas travel rush.
FAAN said the proposed closure would begin on October 20, 2026, and last approximately 25 days, although the dates are still subject to final confirmation.
The authority explained that the planned intervention became necessary after sections of the runway developed potholes and extensive surface cracks, with recent heavy rainfall worsening the damage.
In a statement announcing the proposed works, FAAN Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, said the repairs were intended to improve runway safety and prepare the airport for increased passenger and flight traffic during the festive season.
Runway Repairs and Extension Planned
According to FAAN, the rehabilitation will involve repairing damaged pavement, treating cracks and resurfacing affected sections of the runway.
The project will also include a runway extension designed to allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as air traffic to the region increases.
FAAN said the expansion is expected to improve passenger comfort and make air travel through the airport more convenient.
The authority stated:
“These repairs will also include the extension of the runway, which will enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as traffic to the region grows. This expansion is aimed at improving passenger comfort and facilitating a more seamless travel experience.”
Travellers Advised to Contact Airlines
FAAN has advised passengers intending to use the Owerri airport during the proposed closure period to contact their airlines for information about flight schedules and possible alternative arrangements.
The authority said it would continue consulting relevant stakeholders and announce the confirmed closure and reopening dates once they had been finalised.
FAAN also appealed for the cooperation and understanding of passengers, airlines and other airport users while the work is carried out.
The authority said the planned intervention forms part of its ongoing efforts to maintain safe, efficient and reliable airport operations, particularly as travel demand is expected to rise during the Christmas season.
