Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has called on Northerners to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, arguing that the South should be allowed to complete an eight-year presidential tenure before power returns to the North.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House during the flag-off of the distribution of 50 branded vehicles donated by High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor said the North had already completed an eight-year presidential tenure under former President Muhammadu Buhari, who governed Nigeria from 2015 to 2023.
According to Yusuf, the principle of rotational presidency between the North and South means the South should also be allowed to complete eight years under Tinubu.
“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is serving Nigeria for the last three and a half years. Now we are coming for another election. Therefore, it is our responsibility as Nigerians to agree that the President should be re-elected for another term of office,” he said.
Yusuf argued that supporting Tinubu for another term would allow the current presidential rotation to run its course before power returns to the North.
“At the end of that, power will come back to the North. And only Allah knows who will be the President of Nigeria,” the governor said.
He specifically appealed to Northerners, particularly people in the North-West, to support Tinubu during the 2027 presidential election.
“We have to exercise patience. May Allah get us through to 2031,” Yusuf said.
The governor also called on political parties and their supporters to ensure that campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections remained peaceful and focused on issues.
He urged politicians to avoid character assassination and instead present their achievements, programmes and plans to voters.
Yusuf said political campaigns should be centred on development and the welfare of Nigerians rather than personal attacks.
His comments come as political parties and politicians intensify mobilisation and alliance-building ahead of the 2027 general elections.
