The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s relationships with key international partners as the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit takes place in New Delhi, India, from September 12 to 13.
The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja.
Nkwocha said Nigeria’s participation would provide an opportunity to expand cooperation with international partners across areas including trade, investment, energy, agriculture, solid minerals, technology and innovation.
He explained that the engagements would also support Nigeria’s efforts to promote stronger collaboration among countries of the Global South.
Vice President Kashim Shettima is representing President Bola Tinubu at the summit, which is being held at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
During the summit, Shettima is expected to participate in plenary and high-level meetings involving BRICS member and partner countries. Discussions will focus on global economic growth, multilateral cooperation and shared development priorities.
The Vice President will also hold bilateral meetings with leaders and senior government officials from participating countries, with discussions expected to explore opportunities for deeper economic and diplomatic relations with Nigeria.
“Nigeria, a BRICS partner country since January 2025, is opening another channel for the country to deepen South-South cooperation and engage some of the world’s largest emerging economies on trade, investment, development finance and reform of global governance institutions.
“The country’s participation is consistent with President Tinubu’s drive to strengthen the country’s international economic partnerships, attract investment and expand markets for Nigerian products, particularly in agriculture, energy, minerals and other non-oil sectors,” Nkwocha said.
The presidential aide said Shettima would return to Nigeria shortly after participating in the summit.
