The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has questioned why insecurity continues to spread across Nigeria despite advances in technology that should make it easier for authorities to locate people and track criminal activities.
Obi spoke during an exclusive interview with ARISE News on Thursday while discussing how his administration would tackle kidnapping, ransom demands and other security challenges if elected in 2027.
Government Knows Where People Are
Obi argued that modern technology has made it possible for governments to determine the location of individuals, questioning why similar capabilities have not been effectively deployed against criminals.
“In today’s world, you can know where people are,” he said.
The former Anambra State governor also questioned the use of government surveillance equipment, suggesting that resources allegedly being used to monitor political opponents should instead be focused on locating and apprehending criminals.
“Today, the government knows where I am. All those equipment’s they’re using to focus on opponents, should we focus on criminals?” Obi asked.
I’ll Focus on Criminals
Obi said that if elected president, his administration would not spend its resources pursuing political opponents, but would concentrate on addressing criminal activities and protecting Nigerians.
“I’m not going to follow any opponents. I don’t care where they are. I don’t care what they do. It’s not my business. I’m going to focus it where it is,” he said.
Obi Questions Security Response
The NDC candidate said the continued occurrence of kidnappings despite the availability of modern technology raised questions about the effectiveness of Nigeria’s security response.
“I don’t know who, but there’s something wrong. Not in today’s world. Because we’re serious. It’s happening to everybody. It’s happening every day. So, there’s something wrong,” he said.
He maintained that the government needs to make better use of available technology and security resources to protect citizens and confront criminal activities across the country.
