The presidential candidate of the New Democratic Coalition (NDC), Peter Obi, has said the party will establish a system to transmit results from polling units to its own situation room during the 2027 general election.
Obi made this known in an interview with Arise TV, saying the proposed system would help ensure that results recorded at polling units are accurately transmitted and prevent the introduction of figures that did not originate from the polling units.
“We must make sure that at every polling unit, the votes are counted, the votes are recorded properly, the votes are transmitted properly, and we will even have a dual transmission so that as it is going to the proper, designated INEC portal, it is also being transmitted where the people can see it,” Obi said.
“All we are saying is that this time around, we will make sure that in every polling unit, we must have a system that transmits to our own situation room the correct results. And I’m sure there are many other agencies that intend to do the same.
“So we are not going to have a situation where somebody just pronounces something that didn’t emanate from the polling unit. Our task is to make sure that the right things are done.”
Obi said the election must be free and transparent, stressing that the contest is “not about parties” but “people versus the government”.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) currently uploads polling unit results to its Result Viewing Portal (IReV), an online platform through which voters, political parties, candidates, observers and other stakeholders can view scanned copies of result sheets uploaded from polling units.
Before the 2023 general election, INEC assured Nigerians that polling unit results would be uploaded to the portal in real time.
However, during the election, the portal remained inactive for an extended period even after voting had ended at some polling units, a development that generated concerns and suspicion among many Nigerians.
