The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has declared that he remains firmly in control of political structures in Rivers State and the nation’s capital, Abuja, dismissing the suggestion that political influence depends solely on holding an elected executive position.
Wike made the claim on Wednesday during a media chat in Abuja.
The former Rivers State governor rejected the argument that being a sitting governor is necessary to maintain political control in a state, describing his influence as a well-established grassroots political structure that operates beyond formal government positions.
Addressing discussions about his continued political activities and frequent visits to Rivers State, Wike described himself as the leader directing the political machinery on the ground in both Rivers and the FCT.
He maintained that his political influence remained strong despite changes in the political situation in Rivers State.
Wike also pledged to use his political structures to secure electoral victories for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in both Rivers State and the FCT during the 2027 general elections.
“You don’t need to be a governor before you’ll be in charge. I am the General Commander of the Political Infantry here. So also in the FCT,” Wike declared.
He said his political responsibility was to ensure that his grassroots network remained aligned with the Tinubu administration and delivered the expected electoral support.
“I owe the President to give these two as far as the election is concerned,” Wike added.
The FCT minister also explained his frequent trips to Rivers State, rejecting suggestions that the visits meant he was neglecting his responsibilities in Abuja or preparing to relocate permanently.
According to Wike, effective political leadership requires regular physical engagement with local stakeholders rather than managing political structures remotely from the federal capital.
He argued that political leaders who depend solely on information from others while remaining in executive offices could make wrong strategic decisions.
Wike said maintaining direct communication with his political allies and grassroots supporters allows him to understand developments firsthand and ensures that political directives are effectively implemented.
