The Media Office of Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has rejected what it described as a false “northern whisper campaign” targeting the former Anambra State governor ahead of the 2027 election.
In a statement signed on Saturday by POMR spokesman Idris Zekeri, the office alleged that some individuals were spreading claims about Obi’s relationship with northerners during his time as governor.
The media office said the allegations had persisted despite what it described as denials from northern leaders in Anambra State, who reportedly affirmed Obi’s support for them both while in office and afterwards.
It alleged that the claims were being quietly circulated at gatherings in northern communities in an attempt to create suspicion around Obi’s relationship with northerners.
The group challenged those behind the alleged campaign to provide specific names, dates, records and other verifiable evidence to support their claims.
“We challenge those behind this campaign to provide names, dates, records, and verifiable evidence supporting their allegations.”
The media office maintained that Obi governed Anambra State without discrimination based on ethnicity or religion and said his relationship with people from northern Nigeria was not based on the claims being circulated.
It further accused political opponents of resorting to ethnic politics and misinformation as the 2027 election draws closer, arguing that Obi should instead be judged on his competence, integrity and record in public service.
The group urged people in the North to rely on evidence and policies rather than rumours or political propaganda.
“Seek facts, not rumours; evidence, not whispers; and policies, not propaganda.”
The statement concluded by calling for an end to what it described as attempts to use ethnic divisions for political purposes.
