The Osun State Government has warned political groups and individuals against acts capable of triggering fresh violence following the recently concluded governorship election.
The warning comes amid reports of attacks on opposition members in some parts of the state, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) calling on Governor Ademola Adeleke to restrain his supporters.
In a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the state government said Osun needed to heal from the tensions that preceded the election rather than return to violence.
The government said it was particularly concerned by reports of plans to cause fresh unrest across some local government areas and motor parks, urging those behind any such plans to stop immediately.
“Osun needs peace for development, not political violence.”
The government also said the election had been concluded and urged political actors to embrace reconciliation and peaceful coexistence.
It further called on security agencies to enforce the rule of law, including ensuring the release of political detainees and addressing concerns over alleged partisan policing, particularly in local government and motor park management.
The government appealed to all political actors to speak and act peacefully, stressing that the state should now focus on healing and development.
“We must not allow a relapse into the pre-election era of killings and violence.”
