The Pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, urging him to treat the renewed mandate as a responsibility to the people rather than a political trophy.
In a statement by its National Organising Secretary, Abagun Kole Omololu, the group also congratulated the people of Osun State for what it described as their commitment to democracy and peaceful participation in the election.
Afenifere said the people’s verdict must be respected and their mandate regarded as sacred.
The group urged Adeleke to approach his second term with humility, fairness and a strong commitment to the public interest.
“The mandate is not a political trophy, but a solemn covenant with the entire people of Osun State.”
Omololu called on the governor to govern inclusively and put the interests of the state above partisan considerations.
Afenifere also praised President Bola Tinubu for calling Adeleke to congratulate him before the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) formally declared the result.
The group noted that the President’s gesture was particularly significant because the candidate of his own political party was defeated in the election.
According to Afenifere, Tinubu’s action demonstrated that political competition should not override the national interest.
“Electoral contests should end with the graceful acceptance of the people’s verdict, rather than descend into vendetta or institutional hostility.”
The organisation described the President’s conduct as an example for political leaders across the country, stressing that political fortunes are temporary while democratic institutions and national unity should endure.
Afenifere also praised Osun voters for their democratic vigilance and wished Adeleke wisdom and courage as he begins another term in office.
