President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has welcomed Nigeria’s official admission into the World Energy Council (WEC), describing the milestone as a major achievement that reflects growing international confidence in the country’s ongoing energy reforms.
The President said Nigeria’s membership of the global energy body will strengthen the country’s role in shaping international discussions on energy security, sustainability and equitable access to energy.
The World Energy Council, founded over a century ago, is a global network comprising more than 100 member countries working to promote sustainable energy development worldwide.
Reacting to Nigeria’s admission, President Tinubu said the development marks a proud moment for the nation and further reinforces its leadership position in Africa’s energy sector.
He also congratulated the newly appointed leadership of WEC Nigeria, led by Abdulrazaq Isa as Chairman and Bala Wunti as Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Tinubu praised Isa for his contributions to Nigeria’s industrial and energy sectors, describing him as a patriotic businessman whose investments have helped strengthen indigenous refining and industrial development.
The President also commended Wunti for his decades of service in the energy industry, noting that his leadership and reform efforts have contributed to improving investor confidence and increasing national revenue.
According to Tinubu, the composition of the inaugural board—which includes industry experts, regulators, financial professionals, academics and youth representatives—provides the experience and credibility needed to successfully lead the organisation in Nigeria.
“Nigeria has joined the World Energy Council to lead, not just participate, to ensure Africa’s voice shapes global energy decisions,” the President said.
Tinubu reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to supporting WEC Nigeria as an independent platform for policy discussions, innovation, investment promotion and collaboration within the energy sector.
He also reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to work closely with the World Energy Council headquarters in London and other member countries to promote secure, affordable and sustainable energy for all.
The President wished the newly inaugurated Chairman, CEO and members of the board success as they begin what he described as a historic national assignment.
