First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu has praised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for the transformation of Abuja’s City Gate, saying his legacy will be measured by his contributions to the development of the nation’s capital.
Speaking during a ceremony recognising the FCT Administration’s environmental initiatives, the First Lady described the redevelopment of the City Gate as a remarkable achievement and commended Wike for improving one of Abuja’s most prominent landmarks.
“When I saw what he did with the City Gate, my God, unbelievable. I want to thank him. He has done very well,” she said.
According to Senator Tinubu, the transformation reflects the vision behind the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Green Nigeria Challenge, which encourages communities to convert abandoned public spaces into clean and eco-friendly environments.
Disappointed Over Poor Participation
The First Lady expressed disappointment that no state participated in the Community Category of the Green Nigeria Challenge despite the ₦50 million prize offered to encourage environmental projects.
She explained that the initiative was designed to involve young people in reclaiming neglected public spaces, including dumpsites, and transforming them into parks and recreational centres.
“Our goal is to complement government’s efforts in beautifying the environment, promoting healthier communities and improving the quality of life of our people,” she stated.
She also urged the wives of state governors to encourage young Nigerians to join environmental clubs and sustainability programmes in schools.
Wike Reveals First Lady Inspired the Project
In his remarks, Wike disclosed that the First Lady played a key role in inspiring the City Gate project through her consistent advocacy for environmental improvement.
According to the minister, Senator Tinubu challenged the FCT Administration to improve Abuja’s appearance after observing the standards of public spaces in other countries.
“She called me and asked why we travel abroad without learning from what we see. She pointed to the condition of our City Gate and encouraged us to do something about it,” Wike said.
He explained that the administration later worked with the original designers of the City Gate to develop a new design that has transformed the area into a vibrant recreational destination.
More Projects Planned
Wike said similar environmental projects would soon be extended to other parts of Abuja, including the Lifecamp area, as part of efforts to create more green and recreational spaces.
He stressed that environmental cleanliness remains a vital part of urban development, noting that beautiful surroundings are among the key features of modern cities.
The minister thanked the First Lady for recognising the efforts of the FCT Administration, saying her encouragement has motivated the team to do even more.
At the event, Senator Tinubu presented Certificates of Commendation to Wike and the Minister of State for the FCT, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure, on behalf of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI).
She also announced that entries for the Household and State categories of the Green Nigeria Challenge will remain open until December 20, 2026.
