Fear and anger have spread across Nding Susut community in Plateau State after gunmen launched another deadly attack, killing six people, including five members of the same family.
The latest assault, which happened in Fan District of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area, has renewed concerns over the persistent violence affecting communities in the state.
According to residents, the attackers stormed the community late Tuesday night and opened fire on villagers who were outside their homes.
A resident, Weng Christopher, confirmed the incident and described the situation as deeply troubling for locals who now live in constant fear.
“Five members of the same family were killed on the spot, while another resident was also shot dead during the attack,” he said.
Christopher lamented the repeated attacks in the area, stressing that residents no longer feel safe in their communities.
“This is becoming too frequent. People are living in constant fear,” he added.
The Publicity Secretary of Berom Youth Moulders, Rwang Tengwong, also confirmed the attack and called for urgent intervention from security agencies.
“The spate of attacks is one too many,” Tengwong said.
He further revealed that the gunmen attempted a similar assault on Rim community in neighbouring Riyom Local Government Area on the same night.
According to him, the attack was successfully repelled by local vigilantes alongside operatives of Operation Rainbow, the Plateau State security outfit.
The latest killings have left many residents anxious, with growing calls for both state and federal authorities to strengthen security measures across affected communities.
The Plateau State Police Command confirmed the incident in an official statement released on Wednesday by police spokesperson Alfred Alabo.
According to the statement, the attackers opened fire on residents seated outside their homes, leading to the deaths of five persons, including four women and a nine-year-old boy.
The police added that three other victims sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at a hospital, while the bodies of the deceased have been deposited at the morgue.
Authorities disclosed that security operatives led by the Divisional Police Officer in Barkin Ladi were immediately deployed to the scene after the attack.
The command stated that the area has since been secured while efforts continue to restore calm.
SECURITY MEASURES
The Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, condemned the killings and extended condolences to affected families.
To prevent further violence, the police said additional tactical units, including mobile police operatives, have been deployed for patrols, intelligence gathering, and rapid response operations.
The command also confirmed that investigations are ongoing in collaboration with other security agencies and community leaders to identify and arrest those responsible.
Residents were urged to remain calm and provide useful information that could assist ongoing investigations.
The latest attack in Barkin Ladi adds to the growing list of violent incidents troubling communities in Plateau State. As fear continues to spread among residents, many are demanding stronger security action and long-term measures to end the recurring bloodshed in the region.
